Cassia vs. ceylon cinnamon: health and choosing the right spice

cinnamon

Cinnamon has been a cherished spice in our Persian-inspired kitchen for years. From lubia polo to zereshk polo, its warming flavour enhances some of our family’s favourite dishes. Whether added to rice water or sprinkled on steamed Persian rice (Chelow), cinnamon elevates our dining experience. But, my husband H’s recent spice journey revealed an important distinction in cinnamon varieties.

More than just a flavour enhancer

With the highest antioxidant value among all spices, cinnamon is more than just a delightful flavour enhancer. Studies suggest that it can help regulate blood sugar levels, curbing carb cravings and hunger pangs. Some ongoing research even points towards its potential as a weight-loss aid. So, keeping cinnamon on hand is not just a culinary choice but also a health-conscious one.

Fact: Cinnamon has the highest antioxidant value among spices and may help regulate blood sugar and support weight management.

While in the UK, many associate cinnamon with Christmas treats, its versatility extends beyond the festive season. In our household, cinnamon is a staple in various Persian dishes like lubia polo and macaroni. A sprinkle on your latte adds warmth and sweetness without extra sugar, making it a versatile substitute for traditional sweeteners.

H’s cinnamon rash

During lockdown, H experienced a persistent facial rash that led us on a spice self-discovery journey. Despite allergy tests, the culprit was elusive until we identified Cassia cinnamon as the cause. Switching to Seasoned Pioneers’ Ceylon cinnamon resolved H’s skin issues. This change not only improved his skin but also enhanced our Persian dishes with a commitment to quality.

Cassia vs. Ceylon: unveiling the differences

Understanding the differences between Cassia and Ceylon cinnamon is crucial. Cassia cinnamon, derived from the Cinnamomum cassia tree, has a robust flavor, darker hue, and thicker sticks. In contrast, Ceylon cinnamon (the “true cinnamon”) from Sri Lanka is milder, sweeter, and has a finer texture.

Fact: Cassia has higher coumarin levels which may be harmful in large doses. Ceylon cinnamon is milder, sweeter, and safer for regular use.

Choose your cinnamon wisely

Next time you reach for that cinnamon shaker, consider the type you’re using. Whether spicing up Persian dishes or adding warmth to your latte, choosing the right cinnamon can enhance your well-being. Remember, not all cinnamon sticks are created equal.

Fact File:
  • Ceylon cinnamon is milder and sweeter compared to Cassia.
  • Cinnamon helps with blood sugar regulation and may aid in weight loss.
  • Cassia cinnamon can cause allergic reactions; Ceylon cinnamon is a safer option.
