Postpartum exercise with baby: how walking helped me rebuild my strength and confidence

Countryside ramble

After my six-week check left me feeling more like a medical statistic than a new mum, I promised myself I’d move, not for vanity, but for sanity. I wasn’t chasing a pre-baby body, just a sense of me again. So when I stumbled upon a local family ramble at Great Park Community Centre in Newcastle, it felt like the gentle re-entry into fitness I’d been waiting for.

You may remember how deflated I felt after my six-week check-up. Nothing quite humbles you like hearing the words “obese bracket” when you’re still half-running on biscuits and breast milk. I’d vowed to do something about it, but at six weeks postpartum, I wasn’t about to fling myself into a HIIT class. I needed something gentle, doable, and ideally baby-inclusive because childcare was as mythical as sleep at that stage.

Discovering my new base

While exploring my new home turf in Great Park, Newcastle, I spotted a handwritten notice for a family ramble. It sounded just my pace, exercise disguised as a stroll. So I signed up and treated myself to a BabyBjörn Original Carrier in classic black cotton. The sort of purchase that makes you feel like you’ve got life together again, even if you haven’t brushed your hair properly in days.

Baby steps, literally

The BabyBjörn quickly became my secret weapon. It was supportive, sturdy, and made me feel just a touch like Wonder Woman with a front pouch. Cyrus, at four months old, fitted perfectly, his head tucked neatly under my chin. With every walk, I felt myself getting stronger, my confidence quietly returning. I wasn’t chasing a flat stomach, just a sense of self.

A walk on the wild side

The four-mile ramble took us through Great Park’s wetlands, meadows and woodland trails. Our guide pointed out everything from sticklebacks and shrimp in the River Ouseburn to flashes of kingfishers darting between branches. The rhythm of walking lulled Cyrus to sleep while I swapped small talk and survival tips with other new mums. It was the sort of simple, grounding joy no gym could replicate.

Great Park Highlights

Did you know?

  • The River Ouseburn is home to freshwater shrimp, sticklebacks and even kingfishers.
  • Ouseburn Meadows features meadows, wetlands and woodland trails perfect for family walks.
  • SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) help prevent flooding while supporting local wildlife.

Nature, nurture, and SuDS

As we passed through Ouseburn Meadows and up towards Warkworth Woods, I learned that Great Park’s wetlands weren’t just pretty, they were cleverly designed SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) to prevent flooding. Willow and alder trees had been planted nearby, drawing in birds and giving the whole place an eco-zen vibe. Who knew flood defence could double as therapy for tired mothers?

Finding me again

By the time we looped back to the community centre, Cyrus was stirring, ready for his bottle. I was tired but oddly proud. That walk had ticked more boxes than I expected, exercise and also a little reminder that fitness after birth doesn’t have to be punishing. Sometimes, it just starts with a good pair of trainers, a supportive carrier, and a willingness to show up.

“Motherhood isn’t a race to bounce back. Sometimes, it’s a gentle walk forward, one foot in front of the other, baby in tow.”
