Zeera Indian Restaurant Review: A Family-Friendly Dining Experience in South Shields

Dining out with a toddler is often easier said than done. Most nights, I’d happily order a baby-friendly takeaway pizza and call it a win rather than wrestle with a public tantrum over dinner. So when H and I decided to try Zeera Indian Restaurant in South Shields, an award-winning spot that’s been earning praise for years, we weren’t expecting a serene, stress-free experience—but we hoped the food would at least be worth it.

First impressions matter

Walking in, we were greeted by Shah Choudhury, the restaurant’s friendly managing director, who promptly showed us to our table. This might seem trivial, but with a toddler in tow, the right seating arrangement can make or break the evening. Zeera doesn’t hand out crayons or colouring books, but little C, our pint-sized foodie, was thrilled by the array of dishes on offer. Poppadoms, mango chutney, mixed pickles, and a starter-size portion of chicken tikka soon arrived. He was game for everything, declaring the mango chutney “tasty.”

Space for parents (and wine)

The interior is open and stylish, striking a balance between family-friendly and adult-friendly. Parents can relax with a glass of wine—though I stuck to Diet Coke as I was driving—while H sampled the Montepulciano D’Abruzzo DOP Colle Cavalieri, Cantina Tollo 2016, highly recommended by the staff.

Starters that pack a punch

For starters, I chose garlic mushrooms on puri, while H went for the fiery Neembu Chingri—super king prawns in a tangy, chilli-spiked sauce. Both dishes were outstanding and set high expectations for our mains.

Main courses worth the hype

H opted for Adraki Dhaniya Lamb with pilau rice and a soft, generous plain naan. Cubed lamb slow-cooked with spices, pickled ginger, green chillies, and roasted coriander seeds, garnished with fresh coriander, it was rich, tender, and full of flavour.

I went for Chicken Karahi, cooked with a special spice blend of garlic, ginger, and coriander, paired with mushroom pilau rice and a Peshwari naan. One naan would have been enough for me, but no complaints—comfort food at its best.

Rafael and the waiting team were attentive without being intrusive. When little C ran out of poppadoms and cranberry juice, they refilled without a blink. And when he started playing with my napkin ring, only I noticed.

Factbox: Family-friendly perks
  • Attentive staff happy to accommodate children.
  • Generous portions suitable for sharing.
  • Spacious seating and stylish interior.

Verdict: a family feast worth trying

Zeera certainly lives up to its reputation. With a variety of dishes, attentive staff, and a warm, stylish space, it’s ideal for a family outing—or a quasi-date-night where your toddler eats and plays nearby. Our bill came to £69.70, which felt reasonable for the experience. We’ll definitely be back.

Top 5 family tips for dining at Zeera

  • Arrive early: Beat the dinner rush and secure a comfortable spot for your family.
  • Ask for a “Tiny Taster Platter”: Zeera staff are happy to create a selection of kid-friendly dishes.
  • Bring a favourite sippy cup and snacks: Keeps your little diner content between courses.
  • Pack a quiet toy or distraction: Zeera isn’t equipped with colouring books, but a small toy can save the day.
  • Share a dessert: End the meal on a sweet note for both adults and kids—create memories while indulging together.

I don’t have kids, but I’d love to have them in the future. It’s great when we can take them to the restaurant to enjoy our time spent together. Everything looks so yummy here! 🙂

My parents always encouraged us to try different foods when we were little. It wasn’t always a success, but I do appreciate that sense of adventure as an adult.

We have super adventurous eaters too. But one of our way to ensure they’d eat everything was to never compromise. There is one meal cooked at each meal period, and if you don’t eat, you’ll run hungry…
