Teething remedies: tried-and-tested to unconventional ideas

A new mum over 40's life

Top teething remedies from around the world to soothe your baby

It started with drool, then came chewing, crankiness, loose stools, and finally a string of sleepless nights. Teething has tested nine-month-old Cyrus as much as it has tested his slightly frazzled midlife maman and baba.

Determined to keep baby C soothed through his first tooth, H and I have scoured the globe for remedies. Some made us chuckle, some made us scratch our heads, and a few bordered on the downright bizarre.

From internet-sourced ideas like rubbing whiskey on gums, making a penny necklace, or hanging an egg in a sock, to family suggestions, one auntie recommended chewing raw onion, I’ve learned teething remedies are as diverse as babies themselves. We stuck mostly to the gentle, practical solutions. Here’s what’s worked (and what we’re yet to try):

Our go-to teething arsenal

    • Japanese wooden teething rings: Crafted from antibacterial Cypress wood, these teethers are sturdy and soothing. The Onigiri Hinoki comes in a triangle-shaped box, perfect for babies over three months. Expert tip: wood is naturally anti-bacterial, ideal for little gums.
    • German Zwieback toast cookies: Baked twice for extra crispness, these cookies are traditional in Germany and perfect for gnawing. Did you know? Generations of German babies swear by them.
    • France’s Sophie La Giraffe: More than a teether, Sophie doubles as a toy. We always keep one in C’s changing bag for instant relief when we’re out. Quick tip: handy, hygienic, and comforting on the go.
    • Greek-style chilled yogurt and cucumber in a mesh feeder: Finger foods provide a cooling, soothing effect for sore gums. Warning: expect mess, but it’s worth it. Pro tip: combining yogurt with cucumber in a mesh is refreshingly effective.
    • Gum massage: Gentle finger rubs or a soft-bristled toothbrush can ease discomfort. We use a Brush-Baby toothbrush (£2.10 from Chemist.co.uk) to massage C’s delicate gums and prep him for brushing habits later. Bonus: interactive and soothing for parent and baby alike.
    • Baltic amber necklaces: Succinic acid in amber is believed to have anti-inflammatory effects. Always supervise use and check with your GP. Expert insight: warmth from skin may release succinic acid, easing discomfort naturally.
    • Anbesol liquid: For extreme fussiness, a little Anbesol can help. The liquid version spreads more evenly than gel. Tip: use sparingly and follow pediatric guidance.
    • Nuby Flip Flop Teething Book: Chewable, textured, and washable, this £5.84 book doubles as distraction and gum massage. The attached loop keeps it within reach on the buggy. Fun fact: textures help soothe sore gums while stimulating curiosity.
