The ZipString featured in this review was kindly gifted. As always, the opinions here are entirely our own, Cyrus’s verdict included.
When I first spotted ZipString, I admit I rolled my eyes. “A flying string?” I thought. Surely this wouldn’t hold Cyrus’s attention for more than five minutes. I was so wrong. The moment he picked it up, his eyes lit up, his fingers went into full-on trick mode, and I found myself mesmerised right alongside him. There was giggling, a bit of competitive mum-versus-son-versus-baba H banter, and yes, a minor crash into me, the TV, and the blinds (but no casualties thankfully).
A fun STEM toy that sparks curiosity
Watching him experiment, it was impossible not to notice how naturally he gravitated toward the science behind it. He was calculating angles, timing swings, and testing tricks like a tiny physics lab right in our living room. Lightweight and oddly addictive, ZipString is one of those gadgets that makes you just watch and wonder how it works. It’s impossible not to get caught up in the fun.

Hands-on play that’s social and screen-free
The other thing we love about it is that it’s surprisingly social. Whether it’s teaching me a trick, challenging baba H to a slow-motion duel, or creating new combos on his own, it sparks connection and laughter. It practically begs for slow-mo shots, creative tricks, and those little moments you want to capture on video, but with real amateur footage, not Insta fluff. I didn’t want to spend ages behind the camera because this is the kind of hands-on play that’s refreshingly screen-free for kids, yet utterly engaging.
Why ZipString stands out in a crowded toy room
I can honestly say, in a house full of toys, this one stands out. It’s simple and endlessly replayable. I’ve even caught myself marveling at the tricks he’s invented. Who knew a flying string could become a corkscrew and so entertaining for both nine-year-olds and their mums?
“I love STEM toys, and this one is awesome. You can learn about motion and angles while having fun at the same time. I can’t stop trying new tricks! It’s really easy to use, and I got the hang of it super fast. Sometimes the string gets all knotted, and that’s a bit annoying to fix, but it’s still fun. I really like the coloured strings because they look cool when you do tricks, but I wish they glowed in the dark too, that would be epic! I love making up my own moves, timing my swings, and seeing how far it can go without crashing into anything. It’s really, really cool, and everyone should try it!” – Cyrus
Parents need to know
ZipString isn’t just fun, it’s practical too. Lightweight and portable, it can be played with indoors or out, and it survives the odd crash or two (trust me, we tested it). Suitable for kids around 6 and up, it’s safe, screen-free, and encourages STEM learning through play. The bright, coloured strings make it instantly appealing, and it’s small enough to store easily. Whether it’s solo play or family fun, it sparks creativity.

Why ZipString makes a fab stocking filler
The perfect mix of fun and STEM learning, ZipString slips easily into a Christmas stocking and will make an instant impression. Kids get instant hands-on play, parents get a screen-free activity that actually keeps them entertained for hours, and everyone can enjoy the little moments of “wow, I didn’t think of that!” tricks. It’s a small gift that will bring big smiles.
This exciting new product has just launched in Costco. Available in-store and online, you can grab it here: ZipString Twin Pack – Costco UK, priced at around £34.99. It’s a fun, affordable gadget for kids and a perfect little gift or stocking filler.

(Only half a point deducted for the knots, but they were easy to get out)
