Mum Over 40: blogging on a budget guide

On a budget: starting a blog with limited resources

I’m Saffron, a new mum over 40, finding my way through blogging while adjusting to life with a newborn. Balancing family, work, and personal projects is challenging, and I’m learning it requires patience, focus, and persistence.

Starting a blog on a tight budget has taught me the value of creativity and resourcefulness. For a new mum managing a newborn, every decision, from hosting platforms to design choices matters. Prioritising time, energy, and resources is essential to progress without feeling overwhelmed.

Screen time vs playtime: finding balance

During maternity leave, I wanted to reduce screen time and focus on quality moments with my child. It hasn’t been easy. Technology demands attention, and so does nurturing a baby. Finding balance between online engagement and being present is a continuous learning process.

The realities of free templates and initial setup

Free templates can be appealing, but setting up a blog soon showed me that blogging requires investment in time, effort, and sometimes money. Explaining the project’s value to my partner also highlighted how important support and shared understanding are in any creative pursuit.

Networking with intention: learning from peers

Attending blogging events and networking with other professionals has been invaluable. Conversations often combine personal and professional experiences, providing insights that improve my content. Even small pockets of time, like during a baby’s nap, can be productive for learning new skills.

Maintaining positivity in content creation

Focusing on positive storytelling is a conscious choice. Blogging while managing motherhood comes with challenges, but approaching my work with intention allows me to share authentic experiences that resonate with readers.

Creative development: defining the blog’s identity

Working on the blog’s visual identity, including logo design, is an important step. Colour, style, and presentation reflect the values I want to communicate: honesty, compassion, and relatability.

Building support networks: family and professional guidance

Family, friends, and professional connections provide feedback, encouragement, and guidance. A collaborative approach keeps morale steady and ensures the blog reflects real experiences.

Storytelling as purpose: connecting with readers

Storytelling is central to my blog. My aim is to offer insight, support, and encouragement to other mothers navigating similar experiences. Authenticity and reflection guide my writing, fostering meaningful engagement.

Finding a niche: standing out in a crowded space

Discovering a unique voice in a saturated blogging landscape requires research, experimentation, and persistence. Identifying areas of content that are underexplored allows me to provide value and build a loyal readership.

Professional experience and blogging: using PR skills effectively

My PR background has been an asset. Understanding audience engagement, content strategy, and networking informs my blogging approach, helping build credibility, consistency, and meaningful online connections.

Consistency matters: building trust and presence

Consistency in posting, interaction, and messaging helps build trust with readers. Every piece of content—whether personal reflections or practical advice reflects the blog’s values and contributes to long-term growth.

This is the journey of a new mum over 40 navigating blogging while balancing family, wellbeing, and personal growth. It requires focus, adaptability, and patience, but every step forward feels meaningful.
