A day filled with exploration and fun at the zoo
This past weekend, we ventured to Northumberland Zoo. It is nestled at Eshottheugh Farm in Felton, Morpeth. The location is just half an hour from home and the drive was straightforward. I did have a brief moment of doubt however as we navigated the narrow, winding country lanes. At one point, I was certain we’d taken a wrong turn! But soon enough, we arrived at the zoo, ready for a day filled with exploration and fun.
Family adventure
Northumberland Zoo is home to over 200 species, each more fascinating than the last. One of the highlights of our visit was attending the various keeper talks throughout the day. These talks were brilliantly engaging. They offered insights into how the animals are cared for. The keepers have quirky ways to keep them happy. Cyrus particularly loved the otter talk, discovering an otter named Harry (just like his mate at school!). Watching them juggle stones, swim, and devour raw fish was surprisingly hypnotic.
Natural habitat
We also explored the Lemur Woods exhibit. Walking among these lively, leaping creatures, I felt like we’d stepped into a jungle film set. Cyrus couldn’t stop chatting about their playful antics, nor could I resist whispering “don’t touch the glass” repeatedly.
Black-tailed prairie dogs and alpaca therapy
As we wandered further, we met an array of impressive animals. The African Spurred Tortoise moved with deliberate, grandiose grace. Alpacas flaunted their ridiculously soft coats. Donkeys gave us their signature aloof looks. The Bengal Eagle Owl stared us down with piercing eyes. The black-tailed prairie dogs scuttled about like furry rockets and Cyrus was mesmerised.
Feline royalty and swooping birds
The Canadian Lynx, with its magnificent fur and sharp features, felt like the aristocracy of the animal kingdom. We also attended the birds of prey demonstration, and honestly, I half-expected to need a hard hat. Those raptors swooped with terrifying elegance.
Picnic bliss and reptile chills
Lunch was a blissful picnic under a shady tree. Perfect sun, gentle breeze, and sandwiches that tasted suspiciously gourmet out in the fresh air. Later, in the reptile house, Cyrus fell for a lizard reminiscent of Leo from one of his favourite films. The tarantula prompted a more cautious inspection however.
