My Daily Ritual During Perimenopause

Despite celebrities sharing their own experiences on the menopause, what it means and how to tackle it still remains a bit of a hush-hush. For most women, the onset of changes in their periods begins in their late forties, with the final period usually ending before hitting the mid-50s. However, it’s crucial to note that the journey is an incredibly personal one. Surprisingly, we’re not alone in this experience; the exclusive trio includes humans, killer whales, and short-finned pilot whales.

More Than Meets The Eye

While some women breeze through with no symptoms, others endure acute discomfort. And there’s more to this phase than meets the eye – it’s not just about saying goodbye to periods, dealing with hot flushes, and riding the rollercoaster of mood swings. It’s not just about the physical changes. Those who aren’t going through it often find themselves in uncharted territory, not knowing how to support those experiencing it. Take, for example, my own mam. I had no idea what menopause was, let alone how to help her with her psychological symptoms. She was really irritable, had a lack of motivation and feelings of sadness – and as a hot-headed teen, so was I. We clashed a lot, but I had no idea why. This underscores the gap in understanding and the need for open conversations around this natural phase in a woman’s life.

I’ve adopted a spirited approach to perimenopause as a new mum over 40 – throwing everything I can at it, experimenting with various strategies, and observing what sticks. This phase has become my personal journey of self-discovery, and I’m committed to making the most of it. Despite the inevitable hormonal fluctuations that often bring stress, I’ve found solace in a holistic lifestyle centered around diet and exercise, witnessing a remarkably positive impact on my overall well-being and self-worth.

Let me emphasise that this approach is highly individual, and everyone’s experience is unique. It’s crucial to seek medical advice before embarking on a similar journey alone. However, in my daily routine, I’ve integrated small, yet impactful rituals that contribute to my well-being. I start my day with a refreshing glass of lemon water, followed by a comforting cup of nourishing bone broth at lunchtime. A shot of revitalising wheatgrass juice in the afternoon adds an extra boost, and I cap the evening off with a glass of apple cider vinegar-infused water. Importantly, I’ve spaced these elements throughout the day rather than combining them all at once.

This daily ritual represents my commitment to a holistic approach that, in my belief, nurtures not only my physical health, but also my vitality and balance. Each item on my checklist serves as a mindful act of self-care, contributing to a positive and empowering perspective during this transformative period.
