How to make date day count as new parents

Delights on offer at Boojie Burger inside STACK

As new parents, we don’t get out much. That’s a fact. We’re also part of the ‘Sandwich Generation’ – with people to care for at both ends of the spectrum – so any time together is cherished.

But no matter how many children or adults you have to care for in life and no matter how much they zap the energy out of you, parental self-care is vital.

So earlier this week, H and I had a rare together day to renew our bonds, talk adult stuff and generally put the world to rights! We are both firm believers of when you care for yourself, everybody wins.

After dropping little legs off at nursery and feeling a few waves of guilt wash over us, we headed to our happy place – David Lloyd Gym in Newcastle for a spot of rest and recuperation. This was no time to hit the treadmill, it was the chance to unwind in the steam room, sauna and Jacuzzi.

Following a little bit of pampering, we were ready for a spot of lunch in Newcastle. Now STACK Newcastle has been somewhere we’ve been trying to get inside for a while now, but each time we’ve tried, something urgent has cropped up. We’ve ended up at the drive-thru of a well-known high street burger establishment – with little C in tow.

So with no behavioural issues to attend to, we put our parental responsibilities to one side for a couple of hours and ventured to STACK for some self-healing – as well as a few bevvys and burgers.

There are loads of places to eat and drink inside STACK in Pilgrim Street, Newcastle, but given that we were on a tight Christmas shopping schedule, sustenance at Boojie Burger was what was required.

Boojie Burger is on the upper level in STACK and with its neon signage and open kitchen, looks-wise it’s a pretty funky establishment without even having tried the food! ‘Boojie’ means to aspire to be better than the rest, so we had high expectations for this food-to-go outlet.

It’s great to see Boojie Burger supporting local farmers, butchers and bakers with locally sourced ingredients, from grass-fed Angus beef to outdoor reared pork all from Northumberland. Everything is made fresh daily too, from its hand-pressed burgers to the bread.

The two-for-one Munich Munchies offer that day suited our special needs Christmas budget, so we ordered two Munich burgers and one portion of cheese & beer croquettes which proved just enough. We were given a buzzer to notify us when our food would be ready.

Ordering the two-for-one offer also gave us a chance to enter a competition with Lufthansa and Newcastle International Airport to win return flights to Munich, which would be really lovely!

Now H is a bit of a burger critic and any meat-feast is right up his street. It has to be attractively served, juicy and any sauce must be really tangy. So here’s the verdict on Boojie Burger’s Munich burger.

Our Angus burgers were served in pretzel buns which had a chewy and golden outer crust and soft centre. If you love pretzels, then you will love this style of bun.

They came stuffed with warm German sauerkraut which had just the right level of acidity and tangy mustard, applied with discipline it gave the burgers a real kick. To me, any burger that looks as if it’s getting a good Neanderthal gnawing from H, must be a winner. His verdict was delivered with a big thumbs up.

For a side, the carb-loaded croquettes came with a good overall tan and taste-wise were in a league of their own. They washed down really well with a cold beer.

All in all, a fantastic little find which we fell upon by accident. The food was simple, fresh, flavourful and great value. The service from Connor was very relaxed and friendly. The bill wasn’t bad either coming in at just under £20 for the two of us. We’ll be back.

At the end of our rainy and damp date day, back home I was feeling the frizz so I treated my locks to a Microstem Thickening Mask from cel. This product has become part of my arsenal because it’s a lifesaver for my frizzy, dry, bleached hair. I discovered it recently while searching for natural haircare products online.

Best of all, it’s made with natural ingredients containing plant extracts, including Ginseng and Keratin to strengthen and smooth my hair.

De-tangling my hair can sometimes prove quite cumbersome and often results in hair fall, so being able to just pop this mask on once a week really helps with the harsh winter effects.
